In 1990, Dr David Abdulai created the Shekhinah Food Program. As in every society, the mentally handicapped and the mentally ill are a fringe group in Ghana. The problem is that they are often outcast from their families and so lose any means of existence. Under the food program, 200 people are cooked for each day in Dr David’s house. The Shekhinah team then distributes the food to the mentally ill and handicapped pariahs throughout the city using the food-car. The costs add up to between 200 and 400 Euros per month for fish and corn.
Much is being grown on the clinic’s land itself and the program is mainly run by Doris Abdulai.

Meals are substantial and as balanced as possible. As it is the only meal of the day, a person must be adequately fed for 24 hours with one serving.

Here, the national dish ‘Kenke' is being prepared.

Everybody gets 2 litres of water in a plastic bag so that they don’t dehydrate.

The food is also distributed in plastic bags. Nobody owns any crockery.

One of the mentally ill, who would not be able to survive without the daily food deliveries of the food-car, lives here.
