The founder of the clinic is Dr David Abdulai. Born in 1951,
one of 11 children, he learnt early about hunger, poverty and suffering. However, his family did allow him to go to school, although mainly because his small frame made him less suited to
farm-work! Several scholarships made it possible for him to go to high school, and subsequently to medical school in the capital, Accra, that he graduated from in 1979.

Afterwards, he studied tropical medicine for two years in Liverpool, and then practiced in several African countries. After 6 months of
practicing Ophthalmology in Austria, he returned to his hometown of Tamale. Here, he worked for 6 more years in Tamale Central Hospital, before he founded the Shekhinah Clinic, with his wife Doris Abdulai.
Doris Abdulai primarily takes care of the food program, but also helps David with the running of the Clinic, so that he can concentrate on the medical aspects.
